Abstract
Given at the occasion of the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Association of Medical Radiological Protection as the 25th Shinji Takahashi Memorial Lecture, the presentation begins in the first part a brief history of the evolution of the ICRP system of radiological protection followed by a review of the key elements of the 2007 system recommended by the Commission with an emphasis on its ethical foundation. The second part of the lecture presents the ICRP principles structuring the protection of individuals in the recovery phase after a nuclear accident and the first lessons that can be drawn from the Fukushima experience so far.
